How website visitor identification works
A visit carries an IP address, a browser and a cookie. None contain a name. Tools turn that into a company or a person in three ways.
Updated October 2026
The three ways
Network to company
- Gives you
- The company
- Where
- Worldwide
- Limit
- Misses remote workers
Licensed identity data
- Gives you
- The person
- Where
- Mostly US
- Limit
- Only people the provider knows
Your own data
- Gives you
- The person
- Where
- Your own contacts
- Limit
- Can't name a stranger
1. Matching the network to a company
The visitor’s IP is looked up against known company networks: “someone from Acme.” Weak spot: people working from home show up as their internet provider.
2. Matching against licensed identity data
A data provider that has seen this browser alongside an email (usually via marketing email) returns the person. Mostly US only, for legal reasons.
3. Using what the site already knows
Someone who filled in your form, clicked your email or logged in can be recognised next time. Reliable, but only for people who introduced themselves.
There is no fourth way
- Other sites’ cookies are private to them.
- Fingerprinting recognises a device, not a person.
- So ask any vendor: how many people, how many companies?
How Escendo puts them together
- Every visit matched to a company; home and mobile providers dropped.
- US visitors matched to a person.
- IPs never stored. Global Privacy Control honoured.

Common questions
Can a website read my LinkedIn login to find out who I am?
No. LinkedIn's cookie is private to LinkedIn. A LinkedIn profile in an alert is added after the person is identified.
Does browser fingerprinting identify people?
No. It recognises a device on a return visit, not who owns it.
Why are some visitors never identified?
Home internet, VPNs and mobile networks hide the company, and nobody can name someone no data provider knows.
